A severe storm packing winds of up to 100 miles per hour has battered much of Europe overnight and on Wednesday morning, bringing heavy rain, hail and lightning to the region and leaving some thousands of homes without power.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar accused Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge of politicising the Bhima-Koregaon clashes, in the Lok Sabha. “Congress is facing failure in every state, so it is flaring up this issue. No respite from cold

The intense cold spell continued in the hilly States in north India even as air, road and rail travellers faced cancellations and suspended services. The special CBI court in Ranchi will pronounce the quantum of sentence for Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad and 15 other convicts in a fodder scam case on Thursday. Special judge Shivpal Singh was scheduled to pronounce the quantum of sentence on Wednesday, but deferred after condoling the death of two lawyers, who passed away recently. Read more

The 48-day annual rejuvenation programme for temple and mutt elephants from across the State and Puducherry will begin on January 4 on the banks of River Bhavani behind Vanabadrakali Amman Temple in Thekkampatti, near Mettupalayam. The elephant rejuvenation camp, an initiative of the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, took off in 2003, during her second term in office.
