Delhi boy Dr. Pawan Goel was on his way to Chandigarh take the MD/MS entrance exam at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) when the news broke. “I got to know that I had topped the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) postgraduate entrance exam. I was happy, but decided to take the Chandigarh exam anyway,” says Dr. Goel.He again came out with flying colours, securing the 7th rank in the PGI entrance test. Dr. Goel is now scheduled to attend the counselling session at AIIMS on June 5 and start his course on July 1. His area of specialisation is internal medicine.‘Dream come true’“It’s a dream come true,’’ he says.Dr. Goel is a graduate from Maulana Azad Medical College and completed his schooling from Jaspal Kaur Public School in Shalimar Bagh. He previously secured the 64th rank in the Delhi pre-medical entrance exam. In 2016, he completed his internship. His journey, however, hasn’t been easy. “I always wanted to become a doctor. The first time I appeared for the AIIMS test in November last year, I didn’t get my desired branch. So, I worked harder and took the test again in May,” he says. Dr. Goel, whose father is a physiotherapist, attributes his success to his family.“I thank my family, especially my grandmother, for showing unconditional faith in me,’’ says Dr. Goel.Recipe for successHe also hands out tips for AIIMS aspirants. “The questions are purely concept-based. Therefore, a sound knowledge of the standard textbooks is helpful,” he says. So, how did he celebrate his results? “I had a delicious meal at a restaurant with my family,” he adds.
